For the first year this may well be corn, and for the second year it may be potatoes, while for the third and subsequent years it can be potatoes, bush beans, cabbage, tomatoes, onions or any other crop that is to be hoed and cultivated. The grower may feel assured that as his trees grow they will become readier to take care of themselves( and these annual crops will be much more injured by being crowded by the trees, if this should occur, than will the trees suffer injury from them. One very important point is to be sure that there is enough room given between the crop row and the tree row to permit the horse and cultivator to paes readily without injury to the trees. This should be at least three and one-half feet, and as the tree grows it should be increased each year. The orchardist should bear in mind that he is after trees for fruits, and not after the crop that is growing between them. It will be by no means best, nor will it pay him, to allow his trees to be crowded and barked or skinned by the cultivator for the sake of saving a few stalks of corn or a hill of potatoes. Always cultivate with a short single-tree, and with a muzzle on the horse. Theoretically, only hoed or cultivated crops should be grown in an orchard, and a sowed crop, like the cereals, should be avoided. However, we have grown good wheat and rye in our orchard without see ing any detrimental effects, and at the same time have obtained not only the grain, but what was equally important, also, an abundance of good clean straw to be used in mulching where needed. This was done by drilling one round of the drill far enough between the trees to permit the tree rows to be cultivated like corn rows, and thus the cultivation of the trees continued, ..
